EVE-Online – Turn of bad luck

POS

The corp mates and I had a turn of bad luck the other day…

You see, awhile back, we invested in a POS (Player Owned Station) to place in orbit around a moon near Empire space. The purpose of the POS (at least in our case) is to generate revenue by means of the creation of high end materials for sale in the galactic markets. The POS must be placed around a moon in Low Security space, outside the safety of Empire space. Low security space is generally unsafe space and unprotected, and usually with that high rewards. And there’s where the bad luck comes in.

Ours was a typical medium sized POS with mid range protection by means of a Shield, and several each of Missile Launchers and Rail Guns. We knew going in that this would keep the casual pilot from getting too nosy and bothering us. Fly too close to a POS with the right settings and your ship gets blasted.

At the time, our Corporation members were all flying in unsecured space, or 0.0 space. We joined an alliance a few months ago and were preparing for an alliance mining operation later in the week. I received mail one night about an hour before I went to bed, when I logged into the game to check how things were going. I found that 2 different ships had been shot at and then attacked the POS. At that time, there wasn’t much damage done, and I had hoped that perhaps it was just someone getting too near the station.

But the next day, I found a lot more mail reporting attacks that eventually took the shield down to 0 and put the station into what’s called “Reinforced mode”. This gave us a small window of opportunity to try and either restore shields, or at the very least retrieve equipment and supplies from the hangers. I’m not sure what that small window was, but by the time I was able to Jump Clone back to Empire space, and hook up with the other Corporation members, the Reinforced mode had passed and the station was lost. At the time, a couple of the corp members were busy in jobs, some out of the country and away from their usual computers, and me tied up with either work or family issues…

At any rate, we lost a sizable part of the corp assets in this attack, but not enough to cripple us. We made Isk with the POS overall, and had been considering relocating the POS. I have to say I would have liked to have found a diplomatic way to retrieve the equipment. But such is the game.

We’ll find another location to set up once again, this time perhaps with a larger tower and heavier armament, but for now we are back in Alliance space earning more Isk, to try and make up for our losses. Another day in the life of an EVE pilot. The thrills abound…
