I had a short conversation in game recently about mining etiquette. This was a friendly conversation in my corp with other corp members, talking about what they should do or can do.
I thought I’d bring this question up and see what kind of response I get.
In the Eve Forums, the topic has a lot of different points of view, from “there are no rules”, to the use of moral codes, etc. Basically, the way I see it, this is a MMORPG, that simulates how a real life situation might be. Some players play from the point of view of the Eve-Online game player, others as if they themselves are the pilots trying to carve out a living in the dark confines of space in New Eden.
Personally, I don’t want to make any enemies anywhere, in high sec or low sec, especially from mining. I guess I’m more of a relaxed player. Others, of course, don’t have that same attitude, and I respect that, though if someone is stepping on my while I’m mining, I might not like it. It’s just my point of view though…

I’m a big miner, and starting to think I’m one of that dying breed who genuinely enjoy mining. Generally the only rule that means anything to me is a Variation on the “Urinal Rule”… Crossing Strip Miners just isn’t cool.
It’s been a long time since I played (over a year), but generally there are a couple of guidelines:
1) there are no rules, and no one wants to hear you whine about rules if you feel you were wronged.
2) pay attention to your corp-mates. If someone is mining a spot, go elsewhere, if you’re mining a spot and someone won’t leave, ask nicely that they do.
3) get on the warnings channel. Listen for movements of ‘reds’ in areas near, or leading to yours. It’s your responsibility to know system names and carry a map. Pack up asap if someone is near.
4) never expect help, but show some appreciation monetarily if you get some.
