This last weekend the 19th – 21st, my wife Rhea participated in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. For those of you that don’t know, this is an event where participants commit to walking 60 miles over the course of three days to raise funds for breast cancer research. Rhea is a mommy blogger, and has a website that she blogs about all sorts of things, and with the contacts she has through that, she was able to get support and sponsorship from Energizer for the event.
Energizers press release said “Rhea Tabler, author of the blog Mommy to Three Monkeys, has been selected as the Energizer Keep Going® Blogger for the San Diego event, being held on Nov. 18-20. Tabler, whose wit, charm and never-quit spirit shine through in her blog located at www.mommy23monkeys.com, has already gotten started on both her blogging and training.”
Rhea has been training for the past several months to get ready for this walk, and in her enthusiasm managed to get a stress fracture on her right foot early in the training. She kept at it though hoping that it would work itself out but eventually she needed to go to the doctor and had it diagnosed, and was given a boot to wear. She has had this boot on for several weeks, and with clearance from her doctor, went on with the training, and then with the walk as scheduled. After all, she is the “Keep Going Blogger”.
And, I’m proud to say, she was able to complete most the walk as scheduled!! The 1st day, she did the whole 20 (minus a 1 mile bus ride to catch up to where me and the kids were cheering on the walkers), the 2nd day, it was pouring rain, so they walked 10 miles then went to lunch, and were soaking wet from the rain. This was making her shiver and shake so bad that she hurt from shivering, so they decided to call off the rest of that day and get warm. The 3rd day, she started at 6:30am and after a long hard, half wet, half sunny day, they finally made it to the end. All total, Rhea was able to walk close to 50 of the 60 miles of the course. All of this, while wearing a boot on her broken foot.
I can’t tell you how proud of her I am. And she got praises from so many people along the way about how well she was doing while walking. I expected her to do well, feeding off the energy of the other walkers, but I had no idea she would do as well as she did. Very impressive, I must say.
For this event, Susan G. Komen earned $10.6 million from the over 4000 walkers in San Diego to help raise money and awareness to help in the search for a cure to breast cancer. Rhea is planning to walk again next year, and I’m planning to walk with her. Hopefully with us getting started early, we won’t have to worry about a stress fractured foot. I’m looking forward to participating next year with her.
Thanks for reading.
